Sega Soccer slam is one of those games that does not receive much press or attention. It is one of those silent wonders. Looking a little shoddy on the outside, but once you are in you do not want to get out.
As the title of the game suggests, Sega Soccer Slam is a soccer game. You choose you team, and play games against others to make your way up the ladder, to victory. As the game progresses you will find yourself in weird locations, such as a radioactive factory, or among the Ancient Greeks.
Each side has four (4) players, and a Goalie, who is programmed to save goals by itself. Every soccer field is very small so the action is very fast paced, and it is assured to have a lot of goals scored.
One important aspect that makes Sega Soccer Slam extremely different from other soccer games is the lack of rules. Your character can punch, kick, and brutally beat up any other player to take control of the ball, or just because you feel angry.
Power-Ups can be obtained during game play to enhance your characters performance. Kicking, Punching, Dodging, Passing, Kicking, and Goal Scoring will all get you points to use power up abilities. Using your power up points you can use a special skill to allow your character to move faster, and kick harder or, if you get a full points bar you can do a Killer kick. The Killer Kick involves one character doing a substantial kick, while another one runs into an appearing circle, and kicking the ball before it hits the ground. The ball will fly with enormous speed and you have an immense chance of scoring.
Nothing is more fun than playing a game with real people. Beating the game by yourself is good and all, but to beat some of your friends has more purpose (so you can rub it in their faces). However, if you reckon you would lose against your friends you can always team up with them and just verse the game.
The game play graphics, such as the players are standard. Nice too look at, but nothing that will make you go “OMFG, this pwns everything!” A small letdown is the background scenery, such as the crowd and seating area, it just seems a little flat. But then again, that doesn’t really affect anything important.
During most sports there will be an annoying voice yelling over the loudspeaker cracking lame jokes, this voice is of course is the commentator. At first the commentary might give you a small smile, but to be honest it gets very repetitive after five (5) games, though you can turn it off if you hate it too much.
Sega Soccer Slam is a fun game to play with a lot of original and entertaining assets. The main storyline will last for around a month, but then you always have the multiplayer mode, which adds great replay value.
