Psychonauts is a unique story. Although promising, Microsoft decided to dump the project and leave the developers with no publisher. Then comes along Majesco, a company that has recently been doing quite a bit of pick up work in Microsoft’s wake, picking up many projects that the MS powerhouse decided to scratch. Well, this time the joke is on Microsoft, because Majesco managed to find a diamond in the rough. Plainly put, Psychonauts is just an engaging and downright fun game.
In the game you are Raz, a young psychic who wants to become a Psychaonaut. He begins to notice strange happenings and he infiltrates people’s brains in order to find out what is going on. Except these brains aren’t your typical brain, they are bright, colorful, vibrant, and innovative worlds where Raz has to explore and fend off enemies in order to get to the bottom of the situation.
Most of the gameplay centers around collecting things, collecting A LOT of things. You collect arrows, figments, etc, all while hopping around an expansive, open world that you are free to roam and explore. However, this can at times be very annoying because the worlds aren’t very responsive at times. Like when going to jump onto a ledge, it just seems that you have to be almost too precise otherwise the game won’t register you as hitting it and therefore won’t hold onto it.
What is cool both graphically and gameplay wise is when being inside of a brain. Each brain is different and unique from all the others. Each has its own style and this in itself makes Psychonauts a very personality filled game with plenty of unique and innovative styles thrown in to the different areas. Also, each brain will have you completing very different tasks in order to complete it.
On the subject of graphics, Psychonauts is a surprisingly good looking game. The characters models are quirky but well designed. Animations are smooth if not always precise though thanks to the unresponsive gameplay. The worlds, as mentioned, are quite beautiful and very unique. Overall, Psychonauts just has a very unique, innovative, yet very pretty look to it full of color and contrasts.
Luckily the audio is just as solid and unique as the graphics. Each character has great voice acting and quirky, humorous dialogue to boot. The music is downright awesome and each brain has its own tunes that matches perfectly to go along with it. The sound really helps to draw gamers deeper into the game itself and the storyline behind it.
Psychonauts may not be game of the year material, but it is a very fun platformer and one of the best in its genre this year. It has fun, innovative gameplay elements and plenty of personality and style thrown in. The game is unique in almost every aspect, something that very few games can offer. At the very least, interested gamers should look into giving this title a rental if not deciding to purchase it.
