Knights Of The Old Republic 2 : The Sith Lords

Game Name: Knights Of The Old Republic 2 : The Sith Lords
Console: Sega CD
Reviewed: Unknown

Whilst this appears on the surface to be a stunning game, dig a little deeper, and you will expose many things which turn this GOTY candidate into a frustrating, "could have been", whilst the general game play is okay, the fact it was rushed by Lucas Arts, has cause it to be very bug ridden on PC, and for the endgame story\levels to be completly rushed, with little to no conclusions for the PC's companions, a lack of a difficult end level (compared to the star forge of the first game, this endgame levels are a joke).

The main issues with the rushjob is that the story is not complete, and those with PC versions can listen to parts of conversations that Obsidian had planned, but were dropped by LucasArts in favour of a christmas release, this game needed another 3 to 4 months before it was released, and once you discover the deleted endings, you will also become extremely dissapointed with the actual endings.

This is completly the fault of Lucas Arts IMO, as Obsidian had their orders, and I highly doubt they wanted to do this, but were told to by the Lucas Arts money hungry cronies.

KOTOR could have become one of the great francises in gaming, but this is probably going to undo the brilliance of KOTOR 1, Lucas Arts has gained in the short term, but failed in the long run.

Gameplay

Gameplay has not changed drastically from KOTOR 1, on xbox it the controls are resonably neat and tidy, able to be used effectively in combat.

The story aspects are amazing, until you reach the endgame, the rushjob is very noticable after playing the early game planets (Nar Shadda, and in particular Onderon), and then seeing the lack of quality the final areas and planets are.

On the whole, the combat gameplay is resonably tight, if a little easy, whilst the story gameplay fades towards the planets that revolve around the story arc, finally showing the rushjob on the final planet, a complete joke compared to the "Unknown Planet" and "Star Forge" levels from KOTOR 2, in particular, I would say the end game boss from KOTOR 1, took longer to defeat than the entire final planet on KOTOR 2.

Graphics

Graphics are okay, but not cutting edge, for the most part they do the job, they could be considered working class, not showy or spectacular, but they get the job done. Giving awsome graphics would have meant less time on the story, giving an even more lacklustre story than is there now. I also had to turn the brightness up to begin with, as it was set quite low.

Sound

Again, the sound feels slightly low quality, the voice acting is pretty good though, especially the "Kreia" character, most characters give a good account of themselves voice wise, giving them another aspect to their personalility.

I honestly didnt really hear the music that much, so dont really have much of an opinion on that.

The best music\sound for me is the evil music when you gain Dark Side Points.

Basic sound is okay, but the voice acting is above average.

Score

5 Out Of 10

Summary

If you wish to play a game that you will enjoy for about 20 hours, and then get increasingly dissapointed as the endgame happens, and you discover the alternate\cut endings, culminating in a large anger towards the Lucas Arts rushjob, then buy KOTOR 2. The story rush and endgame bring this down from a 9 or 9.5 down to a 5.
