Ghost Recon 2

Game Name: Ghost Recon 2
Console: Nintendo
Reviewed: Unknown

Tom Clancy. He’s a legend in his own right. Having books, films and games with his name on, he really does know how to keep ‘everyone’ happy. Tom Clancy has had success with the games he has brought out, those titled Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six in particular; and then there is the Splinter Cell series, the most recent, Chaos Theory, which scored a 9.9 in the Official Xbox Magazine; the highest score, ever! Now, here we are with Ghost Recon 2, the second game; at least the real second game, and not an add-on, such as that of Island Thunder.

The year; 2011. The problem; the North Korean Army are growing and strengthening their army by diverting humanitarian aid, leaving the country in total ruins. Knowing the army is planning something big. You, Captain Scott Mitchell and your ‘elite’ team of Ghosts are sent to eliminate the imminent threat.

Although a sequel, some dramatic changes have taken place. Originally focusing form a first-person perspective, the default view has now been changed to a third-person perspective, making it feel more like a tactical shooter. That said, you can alternatively switch to the first-person view in the pause menu. Secondly, there are no teams this time around. Unlike the original, where you controlled two teams, you know have one, four man team, including yourself.

Before each mission, it’s up to you what weaponry you choose for you, not your team. The weaponry is put in specific groups, so it’s easy to navigate; i.e. the group Marksman will contain sniper-rifles, or be a gunner and get a nice hefty weapon. All in all, you can carry four pieces of weaponry; primary, secondary, grenades and on most missions, you will be auto-equipped with a rocket launcher; sadly, it can’t be used whenever you want, but can be used when it has to be used; i.e. shooting a gas tank or a helicopter from the sky.

The levels are quite big and take on average, one hour to complete. The levels vary from the mountaintops, moving to lower levels of a bridge to a quarry where there’s heavy machinery to take cover behind when you come under fire. The environments play a vital part in whether the mission is a success or a failure. Hiding behind rocks and using the terrain is very, very useful. Hiding in bushes, or lying down in the grass making sure the enemy doesn’t see you is the best way to perform your assault on the enemy; alternatively, if you have a good weapon (sniper rival), you can take the enemy out from a distance.

With the single player, comes the online play. Taking levels from the single player, players can do many modes such as holding a position for a certain amount of times, whilst the enemies controlled by the computer run at you, to playing a team deathmatch. Be warned, the game isn’t a simple run and gun, it’s more of a waiting game; camping to gamers and I.

Overall, Ghost Recon 2 is an enjoyable experience and consists of approximately 15 hours of single player gameplay. The online mode is fun for a time, but can get boring within a short space of time, unlike the Rainbow Six and the Splinter Cell series. No doubt, it’s another accomplished mission for Tom Clancy’s name.
