Doom 3: Resurrection of Evil has finally hit the shelves. With it comes a huge $34.99 price tag, nearly twice that of most expansions and really is the price of some full games. This in itself causes one major question to hit gamers’ mind: Is it worth it? Read on in this review to find out the answer.
This expansion is mainly aimed at those who felt like they needed more after the last game.. The game was short, too short for many, and left gamers hanging, wanting so much more. This expansion picks up a couple years following Doom 3, and the story essentially takes you on another quest to hell to stop a wave of demons brought through a portal opened by scientists who just couldn’t get keep their hands off. Naturally, you are being sent to do the clean-up job. Sounds fun, huh?
Since it’s only an expansion, the gameplay is largely similar to the original game. You must wade through countless enemies, hell bent on your destruction, all with limited ammo. The pace of the game is very fast, an arcade style, that puts gamers in the hot seats and requires quick thinking to keep the enemies at bay. The primary additions to the game include a couple new weapons, new enemies, and new powers. The main new gun is the “grabber,” a weapon very similar to Half Life 2’s gravity gun. This weapon can be used to create weapons out of pretty much anything in the environment, a very useful tool to say the least. These weapons are cool but really the game should have offered more additions.
As you’d expect from a Doom 3 game, Resurrection of Evil looks superb. Doom 3’s graphics engine is still only rivaled by a select few. So, as you’d expect, Resurrection of Evil looks absolutely outstanding in all regards. The lighting is realistic and amazing, the textures are smooth, and character models and animations are true eye candy. Enemies look incredibly realistic in all regards and can be blown to pieces in a fairly realistic manner as well. The game just looks plain beautiful.
RoE is pretty solid in its sound department. Although much of the sound has been simply transferred over from Doom 3, that is not necessarily a bad thing as it still sounds excellent. The sound F/X are high quality and well done. The only real addition to the sound department are the new voice-overs which have been done very well. The voice acting isn’t necessarily the games’ strong point, but it does suffice. Although it isn’t as impressive as the graphics, the sound does hold its own in the game.
Doom 3: Resurrection of Evil straight up is not worth the hefty $35 price tag. It just costs way more than it is worth. If it were only around $19.99 like a regular expansion, it might be worth it. But as it is, gamers are NOT advised to waste their hard earned cash on this expansion pack.
