Delta Force is a name that has a rocky track record in the world of gaming. It is one of the most inconsistent series in all of gaming. It has had plenty of amazing, high quality games to build itself up with but also plenty of black sheep to contrast those great games. These black sheep, games that have been far below par at best, have weighed down the series. Now, Novalogic is taking a trip to the past to bring its pride and joy to the present in the form of Delta Force: Xtreme. Can it work?
First of all, Delta Force: Xtreme is kind of sparse compared to modern day shooters. It doesn’t feature the AI, the depth, or the features of more modern shooters. Keep in mind it is just a revived version, basically a new graphics engine and other little touch ups, nothing too impressive. With that in mind, and considering you enjoyed the original or similar games, you may want to continue reading on. If not, it might be best to turn back now.
So, the game is basically just walking through and cutting down enemies with a fairly good assortment of weaponry at your command. There isn’t much of a plot and your own character doesn’t even have a name. Also, the single player only features 20 missions, a number less than half of the original game. But the single player isn’t meant to be the appealing aspect. It is very basic, the enemy AI is terrible, and the missions are poorly designed.
The most fun part of the game is the multiplayer which can hold up to 32 players per server. The action is fast paced and hectic and is definitely a strong point of the game. You can play through all of the modes you’d expect (Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, CTF, etc.) on a variety of maps. In addition, the game has some coop stuff thrown in for some extra gameplay hours. Overall, this is the area of the game where most of your gameplay time will be spent.
Delta Force: Xtreme isn’t presented overly well, but then again the game never looked very good in the first place. Mainly, the game is just designed to be a bargain bin game that appeals to fans of the series by offering good multiplayer options. The graphics are subpar, the character models are bland and plain, environments are sparsely detailed, special effects are nearly non existent, etc. Sound wise, the music isn’t overly fitting and the effects don’t exactly catch your ear. More work could have definitely been put into the presentation area.
Delta Force is definitely a series on its edge, and this newest title is more evidence of this. The game, although a remake worthy of a bargain bin purchase for gamers who just can’t pass it up, doesn’t offer anything really worthwhile. The multiplayer is pretty fun and the fast paced arcade action brings back memories, but the game isn’t really appealing enough. There are just too many other quality shooters available right now.
