Batman Begins

Game Name: Batman Begins
Console: Gamecube
Reviewed: Unknown

Batman, like most comic book characters, hasn’t had a very notable track record in video games. There have been good (and bad) Batman movies, good and bad comics, good and bad toys, etc. Yet it seems as if every single game has been bad. Batman Begins, the newest movie and now game in the long running series for the caped crusader, has gotten its fair share of hype recently as people have started to believe the game can break the monotony and finally produce some quality moments. But, while the movie is getting rave reviews all around, sadly the game falls up short of this feat. Read on for more details.

As you’d expect, the story in the game is parallel to that of the film. You get to basically play as Batman through all of the events that are happening on the big screen. You, Bruce Wayne, must learn how to fight and then go back to Gotham City and avenge your parents death by fighting crime. The story itself will have you taking down baddies as you search for a new mystery drug and try to stop it.

Batman Begins takes a new approach on gameplay. While you still have plenty of Bruce Wayne’s martial arts skills and advanced gadgets to work with, much of the game is focused more on sticking to the shadows. You can creep around and use stealth and darkness to your advantage to quietly take down the bad guys. This also plays into another important aspect of the game: fear. Enemies will fear you. The higher their fear of Batman is, the easier they will be to take down and the less fight they will put up if they spot you.

Bruce Wayne, or Batman, also has plenty of moves to use to get around the levels. Ranging from shimmying across pipes to going hand by hand while hanging on a wall to climbing fences, there are plenty of ways to get around town. However, doing it just isn’t that much fun. The gameplay is too straightforward, the combat is too plain, and there aren’t enough levels to keep you interested for very long.

At least the game looks pretty good. The levels and environments are all fairly well designed and modeled. The characters and animations are superb, looking just like their big screen counterparts and come complete with smooth, realistic movements. Overall, the game has a very quality look and feel to it. This is only supported by the game’s sound, which is definitely above par. The actors from the movie all reprise their roles and lend their voices to the game, enhancing the story and helping to draw gamers in. The music is also fairly good and the effects sound crisp and clear.

So what ends up happening is that Batman Begins turns into a game with a lot of missed potential. It looks good, it sounds good, it is presented well, it has plenty of big names in it, but it just can’t get the basics right. It leaves a lot of question marks as to why more effort wasn’t put in to the gameplay, which is by far the most important aspect of a game. It is just too mediocre and bland, plain and simple.
